Amy Torgeson is an artist working in printmaking and collage. Her work explores the collaborative relationship between both methods; printmaking provides material for collage, and the layering and multi-dimensional qualities of collage make their way back into her printmaking. Her work has been featured in many group exhibitions including Artworks Downtown in San Rafael, the Coos Art Museum in Oregon, and the Compound Gallery in Emeryville. From 2019 to 2020, she was an Artist-in-Residence at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, CA.
Amy’s studio practice emphasizes process and experimentation, seeking to capture the moment when a piece is still "alive and unfinished." She is deeply inspired by storytelling and typography, using it as a foundational element in much of her work. In addition to her artistic practice, she has spent over a decade teaching writing and art to college students through arts organizations and after-school programs. She now leads art workshops in her Sausalito studio, fostering creativity and connection in an intimate setting. Amy resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and two children.
Her creative process is intuitive, blending constraints with improvisation. She draws inspiration from working with a limited set of tools and materials, particularly low-tech methods that are accessible and approachable. Typography continues to play a crucial role in her exploration of abstraction, providing structure while allowing her to focus on patterns, shapes, lines, and color.
